Rise in Air Pollution in Ho Chi Minh City Raises Concerns

(MENAFN) Air pollution concentrations in Vietnam’s southern urban center, Ho Chi Minh City, have surged significantly, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) surpassing 130, reaching levels deemed "unhealthy for sensitive groups," according to data released Thursday.

The Swiss tech firm IQAir identified traffic pollution, especially from the city’s vast fleet of motorcycles, as the primary factor driving persistent pollution.

Additional contributors include manufacturing processes, burning of fossil fuels, smoke from cooking, dust from construction, and emissions from homes.

Adverse meteorological conditions have also trapped contaminants near the surface, aggravating the pollution situation.

Studies have also revealed elevated concentrations of harmful chemical pollutants like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), notably near congested streets and city centers.

This surge in pollution has sparked worries for vulnerable populations, including children, seniors, and individuals with breathing problems.

Locals are advised to reduce outdoor exposure, wear masks outside, and utilize air purifiers indoors.

By Thursday evening, air quality was predicted to show signs of improvement.

Nonetheless, experts emphasize that enduring solutions are essential to tackle the city’s fundamental pollution sources.
